CCG/ZGDV develops advanced solutions for the project Health from Portugal
22 January, 2025

The CCG/ZGDV Institute is part of the PRR—HfPT (Health from Portugal) agenda, which aims to develop a set of advanced solutions for the health sector. The Institute participates in ten PPS (Products, Processes and Services) with skills linked to Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computer Vision and Image Processing, and Usability.

Development of solutions for the detection of neoplasms and lung cancer; management of bone surgery through telesupport tools for surgical procedures and teaching; devices for remote physical monitoring and recovery based on gamification; integration, interpretation and sharing of data are some of the projects in which CCG/ZGDV is involved.

AI technologies lead the way in detecting neoplasms and lung cancer

One of the focuses is the creation of digital tools to assist healthcare professionals in histopathological analysis tasks, namely in detecting neoplasms and lung cancer. Implementing this project is only possible with the use of the “PathoBox” platform, developed by BMD, which houses dozens of studies in high-resolution WSI images, and the help of FMUC specialists/pathologists in noting the areas of interest.

The system is capable of downloading these same annotations, and then CCG/ZGDV researchers “train” the various AI models, based on Deep Learning architectures, for segmentation or classification, depending on the following levels: (1 ) segmentation of the tumour area; (2) targeting stroma and tumour cells; (3) detection and classification of different anomalous cells.

Technological innovations for Digital Health

Remote monitoring and physical recovery, based on gamification (Gripwise) -a mobile digital gaming application - bring numerous benefits to users and healthcare professionals. This appealing solution guarantees accurate exercise assessment through computer vision technologies and remote personalized monitoring (video calling).

CCG/ZGDV professionals and the community are also testing its usability. In the comfort of their home, patients can have rehabilitation validated and properly monitored by health professionals through the prescription of exercises according to their situation.

In digital consultation/telemedicine, CCG/ZGDV is creating a collaborative solution for healthcare professionals using extended reality technologies. This solution allows the sharing of knowledge, planning, and experience in a pre and post-surgery context. In this way, it is possible to plan the surgery in 3D format with the remote participation of all specialists involved.

These are some of the innovations that the CCG/ZGDV is developing, in collaboration with other entities of the HfPT Agenda, contributing to Portugal's leadership position in the digital health sector in the European Union and improving the quality of life of the population and society.
