Interview with André Pilastri, expert in Generative AI and Predictive Analysis at CCG/ZGDV
27 January, 2025

André Pilastri, Senior Researcher at the CCG/ZGDV, specializing in Generative AI and Predictive Analysis, talks to us about the Institute's strategic role in developing disruptive technologies in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence applied to healthcare

What is the CCG/ZGDV's position on AI-based research about technological innovation in the health sector?

The CCG/ZGDV Institute has established itself as one of Portugal's leading centres for applied research and technological innovation. In my area of research, we work on developing disruptive technologies such as Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the most diverse sectors. Our strategic work in the health sector aligns with major PRR agendas such as Health from Portugal (HfPT) to transform innovative concepts into practical solutions.

How does the CCG/ZGDV use these technologies to create innovative solutions and increase social impact on health?

We work in several areas: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), Predictive Analysis, and Deep Learning. These technologies allow us to create practical solutions to complex challenges. For example, we have developed advanced telemedicine and digital consultation systems, which have increased access to healthcare, especially for people further away from large urban centres. In cutting-edge projects, such as supporting clinical trials with GenAI, the CCG/ZGDV combines technological innovation with social impact. Intelligent systems are designed to generate risk alerts, guide clinical decisions, and speed up research into biomarkers, promoting more efficient and personalized healthcare.

What are the guiding pillars of the CCG/ZGDV's initiatives for this sector, and how do you intend to implement them?

The CCG/ZGDV's priority is to expand its initiatives on three key pillars:

  1. Health Promotion: Developing intelligent tools to prevent chronic diseases and educate patients about their health;
  2. Digital Consultation: Optimising medical resources with inclusive and efficient platforms;
  3. Remote Monitoring: Creating advanced solutions for specific health conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and Alzheimer's.

We collaborate with networks such as PRODUTECH DIH, CapTech, and BDVA. These partnerships help us take our solutions across borders and maintain the standard of excellence in digital health and applied AI. We believe in citizen-centered innovation. Our commitment is to combine technology with human impact, making healthcare more accessible, preventive, and inclusive. For us, this is the fundamental step towards the future of medicine.
