Interview with Miguel Azenha, specialist in Building Information Modeling (BIM) at CCG/ZGDV Institute
26 February, 2025

Miguel Azenha, a researcher at CCG/ZGDV and specialist in “Digitalization in Construction,” talks to us about the strategic role of this Institute in the development of disruptive digital technologies applied to the construction sector.

What is the position of CCG/ZGDV regarding technological innovation in the construction sector?

One of the drivers of technological innovation in the construction sector is related to Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM is a methodology for sharing information and communication between all stakeholders during all phases of a construction's life cycle. It is based on a digital model accessible by software that allows virtual manipulation of that same construction. At Instituto CCG/ZGDV, we are working on digital solutions based on BIM models that aim to contribute to the ongoing digital transition in the construction sector.

How does CCG/ZGDV use these digital solutions, and what is their impact on the construction sector?

Information is the central element of BIM and, throughout the different phases of a construction's life cycle, it takes various forms. Therefore, we have been developing digital solutions that facilitate information visualization, interaction and interpretation throughout this cycle. Examples of this include mixed reality applications (virtual and augmented), web asset management interfaces, desktop and mobile tools for construction planning (BIM 4D), artificial intelligence applications based on BIM models, and digital twins, among others. These solutions have been developed in partnership with public and private entities linked to the construction sector, allowing better collaboration between the parties involved in each project we participate in.

Looking to the future, what initiatives will CCG/ZGDV develop, and how do they align with the digitalization strategy for the sector?

The BIM research that we have been developing has been pioneering in many areas nationally. Adding to this the technological skills, as well as the technological transfer aspect that characterizes the CCG/ZGDV, the priorities for the future include:

  • support the digital transition in construction, both in the private and public sectors, providing technological solutions that allow us to respond to the challenges of the present, but also of the future. In this context, the work carried out within the scope of simplified licensing processes and several national municipalities stands out.
  • contribute to developing national and international standardisation related to the BIM methodology and the entire technological ecosystem that supports it. The involvement in organizations such as buildingSMART stands out here.
